There will be a general meeting of the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association at South Queensferry on 24 October 2010.  All orgnisations who are members of the association are invited to send delegates to the meeting.  The draft agenda can be found here:  http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/general-meeting/

This project is energising communities across Scotland.

    I have one reservation…

The skiff appears to be too complicated for many communities to build, with some presently, taking a year to complete construction.

Its possible to design a flat bottomed skiff which would be very similar (and more stable) but of such simplified construction that it would only take communities with some basic tools a few weeks to complete.

    I think its worth considering…

I think we must have pitched it about right, given that we are criticised both for the boat building being too hard and for it being too easy, or at least not traditional enough, in build!! SCRA have adopted St Ayles skiff as a class, and that is not going to change. The boats are a massive achievement to build (and lets be clear, some of the communities have built them with basic tools in a few weeks). Speed of build depends on your human resource.
They look fantastic and so far have proven themselves to be excellent sea boats. I don’t think any of the rowers or bulders would want to swap them for flat bottomed dories.

The kits first became available in December 2009, and before December 2010 we expect to see 12 community built boats joining the prototype on the water. The challenge of boat building has done massive amounts for the communities where boats have been launched so far, and I honestly do not think that we would have achieved the same numbers or the same pride, if we had built flat bottomed ply boats which did not match the heritage of the coasts on which they are being used.

That having been said Tom, if you manage to get a dozen skerry skiffs launched and racing by this time next year, I am sure you will be in a good position to pursuade the SCRA to adopt that as a class for two man sculling boats!

    Best wishes
