Bouncy Racing at Dunbar Regatta

Crews were met by lumpy conditions as they left Dunbar harbour for the racing at Dunbar Coastal Rowing Club’s regatta.  The course was from a transit off the Battery Park, North West towards a single turning bouy which was turned to Starboard. The Crews then turned the Scart Rock, beforeheading back to the original buoy, and back to the start finish line.

Queensferry, Newhaven, Row Porty, North Berwick, Dunbar and Boatie Blest were all represented.

Portobello got off to a great start, winning the first two races of the day being Men’s Open and Ladies Open.  The Mixed Open was brought home by North Berwick, before the increasingly lively conditions caused the course to be shortened.  The Mixed under 21 went to a Dunbar crew in a row over.  Boatie Blest took home the honours in ladies 35+ and mixed 50+, but were narrowly beaten, very narrowly beaten, by North Berwick in the Novice Race.  To qualify for the novice race crew members had to have been rowing for less than a year. (Note that North Berwick Regatta has a different definition of novice, where none of the rowers in the race are to have won a rowing race before.)

Close Finish to Novice Mixed Race

Conditions improved sufficiently by the later afternoon to allow the endurance race to take place. This race round the Dunbar Poo Bouy was won by Skiff John B of North Berwick in 32 minutes 28 seconds, followed by Boatie Blest, Rowporty, Dunbar and North Berwick’s St Baldred.

As a visitor and a complete newcomer to Scottish Coastal Rowing, I had a wonderful day on Saturday at Dunbar, watching the races. Thank you to everyone for taking time to explain the details of this exciting sport. I look forward to seeing you all again!
