The small village of Collieston is built round a bay a few miles north of Aberdeen. There is a real sense of community in the village and the building and launching of their first St Ayles skiff, “Admiral Redsocks” brought out a lot of team pride with the village having a lovely day in the process. There is no rest for the rowers of Collieston now. They need to practice for their first races, this weekend, at the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival Portsoy. Admiral Redsocks will be joined there by 16 other St Ayles skiffs, in one of the largest skiff gatherings of this year, including visitors from the Netherlands, and all the regions of the Skiffiedom of Scotland.
The skiff is named after Rear Admiral Steve Ritchie, Collieston’s most famous resident who died in 2012. Hydrographer of the Navy, Steve was an incredibly colourful character who always wore red socks.
