Skiffieworlds 2016

The next St Ayles Skiff World Championships will be held in 2016, probably during July.   No one who was there will ever forget the fantastic time that was had by all at the 2013 Championships in Ullapool.   The hosting for that championships was led by Ullapool Coastal Rowing Club, to whom all those that attended are very grateful! We are now starting the process finding hosts and a venue for the 2016 Championships.    The decision on a venue and hosts  for 2016 will be taken by the Committee of the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association, but they will consult and obtain the views of any other national associations that have been formed.

The pre-requisites for a venue will be:

  • Space for a multi lane race course of up to around 1km x 300m which will allow fair racing over  around 1500m to 2000m with at least one turn.  Any tidal or likely weather effects on the course should be fair for all.
  • Some degree of shelter to reduce the possibility of racing requiring to be cancelled.
  • The ability to host Championship Races over 3 or 4 days.
  • Space to accommodate 50 or possibly more St Ayles skiffs.
  • Ability to Work with others to lend skiffs to far travelled groups.
  • Facilities that allow the fleet to change crews between races quickly and safely.
  • Adequate safety cover to be available
  • Ability to accommodate upwards of 1000 skiffies within reasonably easy reach of the race course, including camping accommodation.
  • A host organising committee able to take on all aspects of local organisation.

The proposed selection process is:

  • Notice of these pre-requisites to be provided in this post, so that possible hosts can consider possible venues.
  • Expressions of interest can be made to at any time between now and October 2014, and the SCRA committee will assist any body expressing such interest to develop their plans.
  • In October and November 2014 those who have expressed an interest will be invited to submit a written proposal to the SCRA Committee.
  • In November and December 2014 the SCRA committee will consider the proposals (if any are received… fingers crossed) and consult with those who have made the proposals, other national organisations, and any other persons that it is considered appropriate to consult.
  • The decision on a venue will be announced during January or February 2015.

We very much hope that organisers will step forward.  The village of  Ullapool enjoyed hosting the event in 2013 and a very significant boost was made to the local economy.  Hopefully agencies beyond local rowing clubs will be eager to become involved in the non-rowing aspects of the event.

After an extensive poll in our large membership, Crail Rowing Club thinks the next Worlds should be in …Ullapool!
