Naming of Skiffs: The Story of ‘Harry Clasper’

Tomorrow, May 4th, Gateshead will launch their beautiful new skiff, the ‘Harry Clasper’ at 3pm, to be joined by north east skiffs from Blyth, Alnmouth, Byker, Gosforth and Amble.

The North East Maritime Trust has been chosen by local playwright Ed Waugh, to premier his play about Harry Clasper, the greatest ever North East sportsman. Harry Clasper was a legendary, champion Tyneside oarsman, born just a mile upriver from Gateshead.

Performances are on June 29th and  30th, and  July 1st with tickets available from South Shields Visitor Information Centre, who can be contacted on 0191 424 7788.

So, in the middle of the busy regatta season, you might just fancy a few hours enjoying armchair rowing – put the date in your diary!
