Congratulations to St Andrews CRC on the award of the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association’s Green Flag at the recent Zoom AGM! Green Flags recognise good environmental practice and initiatives.

25 members and friends of the St Andrews Coastal Rowing Club gathered at the East Sands for a beach litter pick, on a Sunday just before lockdown. We managed to choose a day when it did not rain, although it was rather windy making it feel rather cold.

The Club has developed a good relationship with the Fife Coast & Countryside Trust and they were very helpful and supportive with the project. They provided disposable gloves, grabbing tongs, container for broken glass, bin bags and a briefing card on safety.

The group was divided into teams that were given particular area to clear. Recent high tides had done a reasonable job of clearing the actual beach but the grass areas, and particularly the carpark, needed a greater effort. The carpark team collected the most rubbish, it being pretty obvious that rubbish and ashtrays had just been tipped out just by the vehicle!

Nonetheless, all went well and facilities were available for coffee or tea and to cook the bacon for the well-earned roll.

For some, this was not the end of the day, the tide was perfect for a row. Well, we had to burn off the bacon roll after all!

Like many of the Coastal Rowing Clubs, St Andrews considers itself more than a rowing club, it is an integral part of the Community.
