Troon Skiff Progress

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award  in South Ayrshire Council are developing the Scottish Coastal Rowing Project in Ayrshire schools, towns and communities by promoting community boat building in  coastal communities such as  Troon,  Maybole,  Ayr, Prestwick and Girvan. 

Sponsorship from Boyd Tunnock of Tunnocks Biscuits and private individuals has already enabled two boat kits to be purchased for Carrick Academy in Maybole and Marr College in Troon.  Pupils and enthusiastic members of the public in both communities are building  St Ayles Skiffs in  Carrick Academy in Maybole and in Troon at a  boat shed donated by West Coast Marine Services at Troon Marina. 

 

 Both boats are being built with the help and support of young people doing their Bronze and Silver “Skills” section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and it is hoped eventually to use the rowing Skiffs for a Dof E Bronze Expedition over 2 days  next year.

 Vincent Mcwhirter South Ayrshire Council DofE Schools Development Officer is working closely with the schools to support and develop more boat building groups with the aim of creating school teams with regular regattas in the Clyde with other west coast boats, as well as competing with other boats around Scotland.
